There is a weight to thirty millimetres of polished black granite that you notice straight away. Nero Santa Lucia, quarried in South Africa, gives a kitchen a solid, dark edge that suits both modern flat-panel doors and painted classic cabinetry.
In use it is about as forgiving as natural stone gets: pans from the hob, the daily chopping routine and family traffic do not trouble it. Occasional sealing keeps oil from settling in, and drying after wiping keeps the black polish even. The same stone can run on to bathroom tops and window sills.
